Hanepoot & the Biggish Band will be performing at the Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town on Wednesday evening July 12 at 21h30.

The Biggish Band played at the Armchair Theatre a number of times during 2002/3 when the band was just getting established around Cape Town, and we're looking forward to getting back to old turf .. it's a cosy venue, and it's your chance to get up real close to the big band, and hear the natural warm sound of all those horns in an almost entirely acoustic setting!

As usual this 18-piece big band will play its purely South African repertoire, including some new tunes. Last month's gig in Lansdowne saw the premier of Douglas Armstrong's new epic 'Firefly's First Tango', and Wednesday night we'll be adding a new arrangement of another Zakes Nkosi classic '10-10 Special' to our repertoire.

You can also expect to hear other arrangements of South African jazz classics (tunes by Errol Dyers, Dollar Brand, Zakes Nkosi, Chris McGregor, Hugh Masekela, etc) as well as some originals composed for the band by Merton Barrow, David Ledbetter, Douglas Armstrong, Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder and others. The music includes tunes based on traditional South African goema and mbaqanga styles, as well as regular big band swing and even some salsa .. not to mention the aforementioned tango again!

Wednesday's gig will start at 21h30 and tickets are R30. Further info from the Armchair on 021 447 1514, or from Nick Green on 021 761 7740. The Armchair Theatre is in Lower Main Road, Observatory, Cape Town. If you have Google Earth installed on your computer, click here to see the Armchair Theatre and surrounds from the sky!
