This event is hosted by the Friends of the
Helderberg Nature Reserve, who run the Educational Environmental
Centre at the Reserve.
The Centre introduces young learners from the
Helderberg area, including Macassar and Nomzamo, to the importance
of our rich environmental heritage, and especially of conserving our
fauna, flora and water.
The Friends of the Helderberg Nature Reserve
generates funds for this programme from this Kirstenbosch-style
Sunset Concert Series in the Reserve on Sunday evenings throughout
the summer.
The Biggish Band is an
18-piece Big Band led by trombonist Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder and
plays only South
African big band jazz material including
new arrangements of 'standards' by the likes of Errol Dyers, Zakes
Nkosi, Hugh Masekela and Dollar Brand, as well as originals by
Merton Barrow, Douglas Armstrong,
David Ledbetter and Hanepoot himself. You’ll hear some Cape goema
and Jo'burg marabi tunes, swing and even a tango. Here's a pic by
Steve Gordon (musicpics.co.za
) from a recent concert in Athlone.
Tickets for Sunday's
concert are
R25 for adults and R5 for scholars. The band plays
from 17h30 to 18h45, and the gates close at
20:00.
