Come and enjoy an evening of great South African
big band jazz with Hanepoot & the Biggish Band, featuring
Lee Thomson, Dan Shout and Kesivan Naidoo, at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg on Sunday March 16 at 19h00.
This entertaining 18-piece big band led by Jannie 'Hanepoot' van
Tonder will play two lively sets from its unique and strictly South
African big band jazz collection.
As a special feature for our annual concert at the Masque Theatre,
we'll be featuring some of South Africa's most sought-after young
musicians, namely Dan Shout on alto sax, Kesivan Naidoo on drums and Lee Thomson on trumpet.
Kesivan originally an Eastern Cape
boy, has played with everybody who is anybody in SA jazz, including in
a number of big bands.
Kes was notably honoured with a SAMRO scholarship in 2004 and chose
to spend a year in India studying with various master drummers, before
returning to the Cape where he has been drumming up a storm
ever since.
The Biggish Band is an 18-piece Big Band led by
trombonist Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder and plays only
South African jazz.
Lee is very active as jazz trumpeter and event organiser in the Cape music scene, playing with various bands, including with Kesivan in Closet Snare and The Restless Natives, but is remarkably best known for his long association with punk band Hog Hoggidy Hog, with whom he's been on several international tours. Lee has also been playing a support role in the Biggish Band for several years, sitting in regularly on lead trumpet, often on short notice ..
Dan is part of a family of
musicians from Oranjemund of all places, and like
Lee, is involved in more than just playing music for a living. Over
and above being in general demand as saxophonist and keyboardist,
including touring regularly with the one-and-only 'le Zulu Blanc'
Johnny Clegg, he is also a partner in agency Shout Music Company
www.shoutmc.com.
Lee Thomson on trumpet, Dan
Shout on alto sax, and Kesivan Naidoo on drums.
Judging by the evidence, Lee seems to have a lot to answer for ..
On Saturday the Biggish Band will take
you through some of its own arrangements of South African jazz
classics by the likes of Errol Dyers, Zakes Nkosi, Dollar Brand,
Chris McGregor and Hugh Masekela, as well as some originals composed
by Merton Barrow, David Ledbetter, Douglas Armstrong, 'Hanepoot' van
Tonder and others. The music includes Cape Town goema, Johannesburg
marabi and big band swing.
We'll aslo be performing a couple of smaller
band arrangements of lesser-known South African jazz classics by
Caiphus Semenya and Kippie Moeketsi.
Previous Biggish Band gigs at the Masque have been a real blast
for both audience and band. The early Sunday evening slot is just
the thing to end off the weekend. The
Masque Theatre is one of the very best concert venues in Cape
Town, with quality lights and sound, and a 'gesellige' bar in the
foyer. It's situated at 37 Main Road, Muizenberg.
The concert will start at 19h00 and tickets are
R50. Book at the Masque Theatre on 021 788 1898 (o/h) or masquetheatre@mweb.co.za
, or contact Nick Green on 021 761 7740 or
